The History of Singer Island
Singer Island takes its name from Paris Eugene Singer, one of 24 children of sewing-machine magnate Isaac Singer. Paris Singer became an influential figure in the early development of Palm Beach and worked closely with celebrated architect Addison Mizner. During Florida’s early real estate boom, Singer envisioned the island as an extraordinary resort destination, with grand hotels, residences and recreational amenities.
Long before that vision, the area had been inhabited by Indigenous peoples, and by the early 1900s a small community known as Inlet City attracted fishermen, including settlers from nearby Riviera Beach and the Bahamas. Singer’s ambitious resort plans ultimately fell victim to the collapse of Florida’s land boom, but his name remained. From Singer Island to Peanut Island: A Piece of Presidential History
Just offshore from Singer Island lies Peanut Island, one of the Palm Beaches’ most fascinating recreational and historic destinations. Originally created from material dredged during development of the Lake Worth Inlet, the island later became the site of a secret Cold War-era nuclear emergency bunker built for President John F. Kennedy, whose family maintained a residence nearby in Palm Beach. Designed as an emergency shelter for the President during a period of heightened Cold War tensions, the bunker remains one of the area’s most unusual pieces of presidential history. The historic bunker is currently closed to the public.

Singer Island’s location near the Palm Beach Inlet makes boating an important part of the island lifestyle. Nearby Sailfish Marina offers dockage, sport-fishing charters, private yacht excursions and water-taxi service throughout the Palm Beaches, including transportation to Peanut Island. The area is also an important sea turtle nesting habitat. Each year, loggerhead, green and leatherback sea turtles return to these protected beaches to nest, adding another extraordinary dimension to Singer Island’s natural coastal environment.
